Intro to Networked Collaboration

Before the end comes i wanted to say…

so before the semester ends i wanted to just post a few things that i have not had time to do.

first the SL event at the Pencil Factory. I really liked this event because not only was there so much interaction with all the students but we got to participate in a discussion and also  got to play around with really cool things. i am not really a wordy person so i have photos from the events. i think aside from getting RL sick it was a successful event.

second i wanted to talk about jump-cut and the mash up. i think all and all i did enjoy working with jump cut. i there are a lot of things that need to be worked on but for the most part it was fun. the direction that stacey, arielle & plumeria i did was fun. we were able to explore the world and see lots of plants. haha. we also got to play around with different kinds of music which is cool because it opens and lets us explore new things.

of all the classes i have taken this was my favorite.

Class in Second Life

So I’ve been trying to post this for the longest time but for some reason my browser would not let me update the blog.

So anyways here is my 2 cents on the second life meeting for class.

I though the whole thing was really interesting. Luckily we had listed off our second life names on the wiki page so it made things easier for me to find someone I knew from the class.

So like Plumeria has mention it was really hard to not interact as much during the class session but having to listen. Rafi has a lot of interesting things to say and watching the video of the kids working with second life  on a archeological expedition in another country is such a cool idea. I did not know that second life could be that involved.

I think I might have scared my roommate when I was responding and telling a little about myself. Because I share a room with 2 other people she thought I was talking to myself and I think it might have freaked her out a little.

Plumeria brought up a good point that not being able to have much interaction and having to listen more defiantly made the session a little more hard to focus. I had noticed my SL charter had slouched over so I had to move the mouse around so that she would be sitting upright again. I felt so tempted to just get up from the sitting position and run around in a circle and then sit down again.

So after the class session Plumeria, Stacy and I stayed and chatted a bit. It was fun to be able to type and give my 2 cents in regards to the conversation. It was difficult only because I felt so awkard to talk while my roommate was in the room. I guess that is why I am not a HUGE fan of video chatting, skype, or talking in secondlife…the feeling of being rude while others are doing something in the room.

I think that there should be more classes held in second life.

SL (Second Life)

Well the first time I ever even herd of Second Life was in the Office when Dwight was explaining to the camera team about how awesome his first life was that he had created a second life account because it was that awesome. (Anyone know what I’m talking about?)

Anyways, so when the class was assigned to join the second life community I thought that it would be interesting to see what all of this is about.

In a sense second life reminds me of the game “The Sims” (note: not SimCity, or SimTower, or any of those other “Sim” games but The Sim’s). For those of you who don’t know what “The Sims” is its basically a game where you build a family or person/couple and control there life. The control there actions, pick and chose a career for them (if you want your Sim to have a career) and build a house for him/her. The most major difference I can think of between the 2 is that with the Sims you can buy expantion packs to get new things and with Second Life you earn it in a sense or can spend money to do so. Also Second Life you can fly. But at one point the Sims even allowed you to go online and interact with other Sims that are real people.

Anyways, so I have been playing around with Second Life for some time now and have found it very interesting. Again it brings me back to the days of when I played the Sims.  So I found my self in the basic intro realm and was exploring. I found the whole experience very interesting. I had tried to communicate with other people but failed miserably. I’m not sure if I was doing it correctly that led to my failure but non the less I did explore. Unsure how to transfer to different realms and parts of Second Life I stumbled upon a link for Second Life vs. reality weight challenge.

The link had me sign into second life and I was teleported to this new world. Trying to explore the new word I found my self at the bottom of the sea floor and flying back up onto ground.

I suppose this world that I was in was a world for an art gallery. Any how so when I signed back into SL I found that things had changed in the world. There was more art, different art and still no one to be found.

Second life is interesting but I don’t think I will use it to much after this class.

Skype

So Andrea and I did the whole skype thing the other night. I for one am still REALLY not into the whole talking via video. I never know what to say. Then again I am not really one for talking a lot ither so I sometimes ponder why I even own a cell phone. HA.

So anyways…we did the whole skype chat and talked about some of the readings the ones we liked the things we liked about it and what knot. The whole expirence was still really weird to me. Again not really one for talking a lot.

After trying to figure out why I could not see Andrea she had discovered the problem was that her photobooth on her mac was open and it was using the camera.

There is something about video chatting that makes me feel weird. I dont know if it is because I feel awkard doing it when my roommates are around, or that there is no privicy unless you put headphones on, but the whole thing is REALLY weird.

On the plus side we had both found out that we have this intrest for art and photogrpahy which was really cool…and I got to see her baby and hes REALLY cute.

But yes the whole thing was a bit weird only because I don’t like to video chat and I don’t like to talk.

Google will take over the world.

In advance I am sorry if some of you know this already. I thought it was interesting and I should share.

So with the topic of Google I thought I’d put my 2 cents in and share what I know and have been researching actually for another class about Google.

So I was looking around googles website (iGoogle a homepage for its user with an account) and with being logged into my Gmail account I was allowed to access the more features that google has.

Aside from its many sub-brands (Blogger, YouTube, Groups, Picasa) all networking tools, they have also created Knol & orkut.

For me I think that it is interesting that Google has taken it to the level of joining and adding another form of social networking to the companies big resume.

Knol like Wiki, allows users to post what they “know”. HA-HA very clever Google. So from my understanding of Knol its basically another Wiki.

Incase some of you are interested in what Knol has t offer this comes directly from the website.

“Knol offers:

  • Ease of use
All you need is an account, a name and a desire to write and we’ll take care of the rest.
  • Control
You specify the level of collaboration you want with the community. Your knol, your voice.
  • Community
You can connect with other experts in your area of interest to share and grow knowledge.
  • Visibility
We value and promote authorship. Great content will be visible on any search engine.
  • Growth
Sharing your knowledge with the world is rewarding for everyone.”
So orkut is a social networking tool just like Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, the list will go on forever. This is what orkut has to say about its self.
“orkut is an online community designed to make your social life more active and stimulating. orkut’s social network can help you maintain existing relationships with pictures and messages, and establish new ones by reaching out to people you’ve never met before.
orkut makes it easy to find people who share your hobbies and interests, look for romantic connections or establish new business contacts. You can also create and join a wide variety of online communities to discuss current events, reconnect with old school mates or even exchange your favorite recipes.
Who you interact with is entirely up to you. Before getting to know an orkut member, you can read their profile and even see how they’re connected to you through the friends network.
To join orkut, simply sign in with your Google Account and you can begin to create your own profile right away. If you do not have a Google Account yet, we will help you create one in minutes.
It is our mission to help you create a closer, more intimate network of friends. We hope to put you on the path to social bliss soon.
Enjoy (= “

So for those of you intrested in either one of these networking tools that Google has to offer I will share and post links.

orkut

Knol

With all that said and done, I’d just like to add one last thing and that is…

Google I am ready for you to put a microchip into my brain and let my brain process on a Google platform. (=

Seemic.com

So i posted my first video and…well i think the website is a cool idea…but a little weird. I guess I’m just not used to the idea of recording myself and seeing everything. Weird…

I think Seemic is a great tool because I can do videos for my family and friends back at home so everyone knows how I am doing. It’s also its a great way to have my parents stop IMing me on AIM 🙂

So that was my little rant and the end.

Week 1 Assignment!!

Q. What are some of the social networks you use and why do you use them?

Yeah so I’ve never used the wordpress type of blogging before but it somewhat like LiveJournal.

So some of the social networks that I use/used are:

LiveJournal, Facebook, Myspace, text/SMS, Friendster, & AIM/Skype/Adium.

For the ones I use:

Facebook – I like facebook because I can be able to connect with students and meet people that go to the same school that I do. It also prevents people from viewing your profile without being your friend.

Myspace – I don’t use this one so much but I have some friends on this that don’t use facebook. I sign on so that I can be connected to them too.

AIM/Skype/Adium – I love to use AIM/Skype/Adium as a chatting tool so that I can instantly chat with friends so I don’t have to deal with long distance fees. The best part all of them offer the ability to video chat so that its like talking to the person face to face.

Oh and if you count SMS/Text Messagesing and emailing via phone as a social networking tool then I do a lot of that too. Its the quickest and easiest ways for me to be able to contact my friends and family on the other coast. 🙂

The ones I don’t use:

LiveJournal – Like any other kind of blog I once used this. I met some interesting people on it and people who had many interest as I do. Although I had the ability who was allowed to see my post I felt so forced to update it every second of my life. I also lost interest in blogging.

Friendster – Like Myspace it is a social networking website. Before Myspace was born or introduced to me I was on this. When I found out of myspace and I soon learned that a lot of my friends were on myspace and so I joined.

I think that the Internet is addicting as it is, and to have another social network, blog, or addicting website to add to my list of places to visit is not on my list of things to do. In other words I don’t need more distractions though out my day before I do my homework.
