We will introduce the concepts of social media and collaboration within networked environments and look at the effects that networked environments have had on our exchanges, the hybrid models of communication that have developed, and the emergent process of networked collaboration. Intro to Networked Collaboration 
Hi, all. I’m Josephine, and I’ll be your instructor. I’ll start off the introductions – here’s a bit about me:
The short version: I’m a media artist, director, performer and educator. I like to dance and make noise and pictures and it’s especially cool when I can make them with electricity and numbers, and then send them over the ether. I also like to jump out of planes.
The long version:
Josephine Dorado is a New York-based media artist, performer and social entrepreneur. In her work, she explores the extension of the performance environment with technology, often utilizing movement-based, sensor-driven synthesis and networked telepresence. She is also interested in the process of cultural exchange through creative interplay in virtual spaces, which led to founding ZoomLab and initiating the Kidz Connect program, which connects students internationally via creative collaboration in virtual worlds such as Second Life. Josephine currently teaches at the New School, where she received her M.A. in Media Studies in 2006. She was a Fulbright scholarship recipient and an artist-in-residence at the Waag Society for Old and New Media in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and continues her involvement with Fulbright as a member of the Board of Directors. Performances include interdisciplinary productions for the ISEA and Romaeuropa Festivals as well as speaking engagements at SIGGRAPH, Queen’s University in Belfast, and London Knowledge Lab. Upcoming ventures include Fractor, for which a MacArthur Foundation award was received, and several mixed reality projects involving dance theater, motion capture analysis and Second Life performance. Josephine’s experience ranging from theater for at-risk children to technology and design, brings perspectives on theater-inspired collaborative methodologies as well as the issues of working within a virtual context.

My name is Terry Polatchek. I am currently the IT manager for the YWCA of Bergen County. I reached a milestone birthday 2 years ago and decided to finish something I started 40 years prior. I became a New School student to finish my BA and go on to an MBA in Non-Profit Management (hopefully).
I live in Morris County, NJ with my husband and 2 cats. We have 5 children and 10 grandchildren under the age of 6!
This course is of great interest to me. At least I’ll learn some of the ways my kids communicate with each other!
My name is Kavya. I am a fulltime student in the New School Bachelor program. I am hoping to join the Masters in Media program at New School next year.
I was working as an Integrated Marketing Manager at an Experiential Marketing Agency here in New York but was recently let go due to internal restructuring.
I am now focussing on speeding up my graduation at the New School by studying full time this semester.
I am a singer in a soul-rock band based in Trondheim, Norway though I’m originally from Texas. After growing up in Houston, I lived in NYC for 7 years where I attended AMDA and The New School as well as singing and performing through out the city. I dropped-out just a year before graduating to work full-time at a PR firm and then to travel in Europe with the money I made. Moved back to Austin, TX to work in PR/Event Planning and sing jazz. My husband got a job with Google, Norway just a year after our son arrived (now 2 and a half); and now we are in Norway doin’ our thing and lovin’ it. I have currently returned to the New School On-line program to complete my BFA after a ten year hiatus. I am very excited by how this course will enable me to network my band in a more progressive way.
I’m Andrea: I’m an artist and art educator, and I’m using blogs for a while now, trying to document teaching processes and involve students and workshop participants in expanded communication … trying to catch a critical glimpse on it here, and get new ideas.
I’m from Vienna, Austria, re-locating to NYC in a couple of weeks with my husband and my 1-year old son.
Also hoping to keep up with projects and friends in Europe and NYC through networked collaboration …

Hi everyone! My name is Arielle and I just turned 21 about a month ago. I’m really excited and kind of nervous about this online course. I’m excited because I am very interested in the subject matter. But, nervous because I’ve never taken an online class before so I hope I can figure out how this works :-P. I just graduated AMDA in the spring and I’m attending The New School to finish my BFA in Musical Theatre. I’m currently in 2 shows in NJ at Pax Amicus Castle Theatre. They both open this weekend! It has been a crazy week haha. Anyway, I’m Jewish and speak fluent Hebrew. I love to dance, sing, and act. You can check out my music myspace at http://www.myspace.com/singerrel. I’m also in an a capella group called The Blue Crystals. My home home is in Jersey and I have an apartment in NYC! I loooove living in the city! I also have 2 older brothers living in the city and 2 Maltese dogs living at home in Jersey. One of my ideas for the future is to move to Israel for a year after I graduate. Actually, this will be the 4th college I’ve attended. I went to UArts for a semester. I didn’t like Philly haha. Then I went to Montclair State which also didn’t work out. That’s when I decided to go to AMDA and I loved it! So I’m really looking forward to a great year at The New School. I’ve heard soo many great things about this school!
Hey everyone! My name is Justin Charles and I’m a junior in the New School Bachelor’s program. My concentration is Media Studies. Once I graduate I’d like to enroll in the Design and Technology MFA program at Parsons or the New School’s Media Studies MA program. If you want to learn a bit more about me you can check out my blog. I’m looking forward to learning more about you all through your posts.
I consult with publishing and media companies and other organizations on new product development and change, and communications programs to engage users, viewers, customers, readers, etc.
I’ve worked on launches of an electronic brokerage that improved productivity for and made $Bs for banks, portals for investors that improved access to investment advice and funds for retirement savers and raised $Bs in new funds, and social media for brands that pushed the envelop about engagement and empowerment in different cultures and languages.
I now work with clients to introduce new skills from interactive to ethnography and other human-centered design research techniques, and help integrate new people and teams into old organizations. Another passion is to reignite the Right Brain in Left Brain organizations and people who’ve had a bit too much Left Brain schooling!
I am working on some new projects to apply Open Space technology to data and information visualizations as a new publishing paradigm for content owners and producers, and want to know more than I do about networked collaboration. Networked collaboration is an important part of what we want to do with these projects.
Hi, I’m Ro! I am in the Bachelor’s program in Liberal Arts pursuing concentrations in Visual Studies and Visual Arts. I also work in the technology department for a big corporation as my day job. This is my first real online class, and I am really looking forward to it based on the topics that are listed on our syllabus.
My interests include photography, running, fashion, and the internet in general. See you guys online!
Hello all. My name is Stacey Collins. I am a new student at The New School, returning to school after 10 years. I work full-time and will be taking 3 classes this sememster. I thought this class looked interesting as I only recently began using online networking sites (facebook; linked-in) for work related purposes. I work in Human Resources and am intersted in exploring how corporations might be able to levarage these online resources, particularly when dealing with the emerging workforce. What effect will this workforce that has grown up “networked” have on the workplace?
On a personal note, I also sing and do theatre. I am part of an experimental theatre company and will be performing in Quebec City, Canada next week. My name is Berry Hatfield and I work in NYC (and other places) as a location scout for film/tv and as a freelance marketing consultant/producer.
I’ve been using some online tools like Google Docs for about a year, and I’m a huge fan. I am taking this class to learn more about how people can work together online, and also how to educate my clients and collaborators about such tools – the hardest part of online collaboration is getting everyone up to speed and educated on the tools and how to use them!
This looks like a very interesting group of students – I’m looking forward to learning more about everyone.

Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie Lim. I was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Pasadena is known for the Rose Parade held each and every 1st of January. I recently moved to New York to attend The New School for General Studies. I have been here for about 2 weeks and loving it. I am still adjusting to the weather with it being so humid here but other then that I have been having so much fun in the city.
I am a transfer student who did a little schooling in Pasadena at the cities community college. I hope to go into Business Marketing and that will be my concentration at the New School.
I also tried to post last time but it seams that last time I tried to post something after waiting a week I still could not find my post.
So that is me and my story. I am so excited to be in this class.
I also like to note that I REALLY LIKE mash potato’s.
Ciao Ragazzi! Greetings from southern-Switzerland! I’m an American interested in launching an interactive resource center on Lake Malawi as part of a larger project teaching sustainable agriculture techniques to villages in hunger (to lay it out there). Last year I started a project called Kelboa Productions that organizes filmmakers to travel abroad working on positive media projects for social change and had our first excursion this summer on Safari from Johannesburg to Mfuwe, Zambia. I have been able to manage the project and build relationships through the internet using great tools such as matador travel, skype, and yahoo live (to name a few) and realized continuing my education was the best bet to obtain the skills I’m lacking.
I hope to move to New York shortly to get a taste of the non-profit sector and hopefully team-up with some established social entrepreneurs.
It is my 3rd year(after taking this past year off) in pursuing a BA focused on Media Advocacy and Humanitarian Intervention with plans of pursuing an MA in Non-Prof Management after next year. I come from Arizona where I like to spend time climbing, going to live-shows, and good restaurants(when I can afford it :P).

I am Plumeria. I live in Honolulu. I am a little behind here, this blog thing is kind of bewildering. Anyway, I am a freelance artist doing work in the book publishing field and photography.
I am also transitioning to the sustainable architecture field with a specific interest in living roofs.
This class looks pretty interesting and I hope to learn a lot. I really like doing collaborative art pieces/social change projects which drives my interest in this class.
